Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) They can live for up to 5 or 6 years in the wild. Head and body length: 18-24 cm Tail length: 14-20 cm Weight: 250-350g Red squirrels’ fur can range from a warm reddish-brown in summer, to a deep brown with grey in winter. The colour may be very variable, ranging from almost black to buff, yet their underside is always cream. They have a bushy tail and ear tufts, they live in both conifer and broad-leaved woodland
Their diet consist of spruce and pine seeds, acorns, berries, fungi, bark and sap tissue. In the autumn they store surplus food either just below the ground or in the gaps in tree trunks.
They are a joy to watch and photograph, They can be right characters with their acrobatics as they jump from tree to tree, giving a curious stare at the human watching them, Most of these images were taken in Morayshire and not from a hide, and I was able to get quite close to them, however they are in no way tame, these are wild squirrels, they will tolerate your presence as long as you remain still and quiet, first and foremost the wildlife always comes first before the photograph, after all you are entering their domain, and you would not be pleased if a stranger came to your home and had no regard for you or your well-being.
